Methods of weaving Chinese rugs
The Chinese observe the ordinary methods employed all through the Orient in the weaving of pile carpets, the difference in the finished product being due to slight technical variations that serve as ear-marks for identification.
These may be noted in the warp and woof threads, and in the way the knots, the ends of which make the pile, are tied.
Even without actual historical records of how and when Chinese fabrics were made, it is quite possible to divide existing specimens in such a way as to determine the relation of one fabric to another ; the changes from domestic to factory weaving and preparation of materials being quite apparent to the analyst.
